Office Politics for Success
Some of us may still hold to our dreams of great wealth or being the CEO of a large company. But for most, achieving some level of success is the (realistic) goal: to be recognized; to get promoted; to play office politics for the win.
But how do we do that? How can we navigate the oftentimes treacherous waters of office politics and come out ahead?
Our examination of office politics will begin with a quick history of political interaction, from the caveman to the present day, with a special look of the power plays of males in the workplace until the 1960s.
Then we’ll review modern principles of office politics for success. Our focus will be on many of the skills and lessons of leadership, including communication, the 80/20 principle, non-verbal communication, “dress for success,” assertiveness, inter-personal skills, loyalty, memorization, diligence, walking & standing cues, the “promise for tomorrow but deliver today” principle, and good old-fashioned energy. This examination will end with simple but important lessons about direct eye contact, the quarter turn smile, and assertive speaking.
Along the way, we’ll explore sociological and psychological backgrounds of effective office politics and the use of research, surveys, and best practices for business smarts.
Learning Outcomes
By completing this presentation, attendees will
- understand the modern principles of office politics.
- recognize how leadership skills can be leveraged in dealing with office politics.
