Applied Improvisation, a 21st Century Management Skill
This presentation introduces the concept of Applied Improvisation (AIM). AIM is an novel, experiential learning process that is increasingly being leveraged to imprive business function. AIM is based on a framework—drawn from the theater—of 3 key values, 9 principles, and over 20 guidelines. Theatrical improv uses a performing cast to create a compelling, out of nothing story that impacts or amuses an audience. Similarly, AIM builds team trust and connects a group of people to improve business function in ambiguous, stressful situations.
The undetermined, the unknown, and the unfamiliar are ongoing issues in today’s business environment. AIM’s principles prepare staff to address workplace volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.
In addition, research from academia finds that AIM training can be used to enhance organizational trust and business performance. It fosters a environment that encourages productivity, innovation, and ultimately higher profitability.
Lastly, business is about creating value—that is—making something where nothing occurred before. AIM Improves a team’s ability to create new value, where none existed before.
In summary, AIM does three things, (1) increases a person’s ability to adapt, move without a script, and deal with ambiguity; (2) improves trust within a team, and (3) helps creates value where it did not exist before.
