    Topic:  Valuing People

    Summary

The words “Human Resources,” taken at face value, show that we recognize human beings as a resource—in other words, that we, and the organizations we represent, value human beings.  Just as clearly, though, we value many other things as well—art, health, safety, profit, efficiency…the list could go on and on.  But what does it mean to say that we value something?  What is the difference between valuing things such as safety or efficiency and valuing human beings?

We’re going to tackle questions like these by thinking carefully about how our behavior reflects our values.  In doing so, we’ll also think about why we value what we do.  This will lead us to a more important question:  What should we value, and why?  I will present a somewhat controversial answer to the questions of why we do, and why we should, value human beings—an answer that is deceptively simple but can allow for profound insights about our thinking about others and our inactions with them.

    Learning Objectives

    With this presentation, participates will

    • achieve a deeper understanding of the important ethical notion of value.
    • appreciate some important differences between valuing human beings and valuing other things.
    • recognize how our thinking about the value of human beings reflects, and is reflected by, our behavior towards other people.
