Topic:  TWO NEW NJ EMPLOYMENT LAWS:  PAID SICK LEAVE AND THE DIANE B ALLEN EQUAL PAY ACT

    NJ Paid Sick Leave Act

NJ became the 10th state to pass a paid sick leave law.  The law becomes effective on October 29, 2018.  Every employer is covered by the law.  Employees earn 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked.  What does this mean to you?

    Learning objectives:
    • What are the specifics of this law - How paid sick leave is earned. How does the earned sick leave get used and for what reasons.
    • Are there any exceptions to the law.
    • Is an employer required to payout or carry over unused paid sick leave.
    • What do you need to do to prepare for the implementation of the law.

Diane B Allen Equal Pay Act

The new law, scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2018, mandates pay equity for employees who are protected from discrimination under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD) by requiring employers to compensate such employees at the same rate of compensation as non-protected employees who perform “substantially similar work,” unless a pay differential is justified by legitimate business necessity in accordance with the Act’s provisions.
