The quality of the talent that is employed in so many companies across our state and across our nation is inconsistent.  There are many great people who accomplish great things. Still studies show that more than 50% of all employees are disengaged and are not contributing all they are capable of achieving. The result is our customers do not receive all that they expect and deserve. So productivity can be spotty and our companies do not achieve the profitability they desire.

This state of affairs is all about the quality and quantity of the talent in our organizations. No matter the industry; every organization should consider themselves in the people business.

We can affect the productivity and talent in our organization in three ways:

    • First when we hire people.
    • Second when they work for us and we train and develop them.
    • Third when they leave- either on their own or because we push them out the door.

So here are some of the principles that can guide these realities.

    • We tend to hire for skill and fire for behavior. So let’s be sure we have a clear plan to hire for both.
    • We should plan for performance and plan to develop people into the kind of people they are fully capable of becoming.
    • All of this activity must be aligned with the business strategies of our organization.
    • Leadership needs to consider talent management as their number one purpose.

We will be discussing how we can build a succession planning and replacement planning process that focuses on:

    • identifying the essential positions required for today and for tomorrow and
    • creating the management and leadership skills so the people skills and abilities match the jobs necessary to meet the demands of our customers in the future.

As the hall of fame hockey player Wayne Gretsky, when asked how he scored more goals than any other hockey player in history, said, “I skate to where the puck is going to be.”

We will talk about how you can have the kind of people you need when you need them to increase your revenue, lower your costs, increase productivity and enhance the bottom line of your company. We will discuss how HR can lead the way to make that happen.
